Residents warned to check solar panel deals

Redditch homeowners are being warned to check special deals being offered by green technology salesmen.

Redditch Borough Council is urging anybody approached with a heavily discounted or free Solar Panels offer to double check with the Energy Saving Trust before purchasing or signing anything.

The warning has been issued after a number of concerned residents contacted the Council about offers they had be given.

Portfolio Holder for Housing, Local Environment and Health, Cllr Brandon Clayton said: “There are many different offers out there, many of which are perfectly legitimate.  But because there are so many different options it is easy to become confused about what you are getting for your money.

“The Council has teamed up with the Energy Saving Trust to make sure people in Redditch receive free and impartial advice on Solar Photovoltaic technology which is becoming more popular and available.”

Ed Leddy Owen, the Trust’s  microgeneration co-ordinator said: “The Energy Saving Trust supports the uptake of microgeneration so long as the technologies are suitable for the property,  will lead to carbon and energy savings and are installed by a Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certificated installer using MCS certificated products.

“Just as with any contract, it’s vital that anyone investigating solar pv should ask a number of questions before deciding to go ahead.”

The Energy Saving Trust provides advice on the best deals and grants and helps residents get information and advice on green technology. They can also advise on whether the company they are dealing with is regulated under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

For more information and to receive advice on buying solar panels call the Energy Saving Trust on freephone 0800 512 012, email advice@est-westmidlands.org.uk quoting “solar deals in Redditch” or call the Council on (01527) 64252.
