Allotments

  • Allotments are provided by local authorities under various
    acts of Parliament including the  1925 Allotments Act.wwwAllotment
    This enables local authorities to provide allotments where there is demand.
  • There are 14 allotment sites in Redditch, two of which are statutory (enacted by parliament and subject to different legislation).
  • There are 790 allotment plots covering approximately 15 hectares.
  • Allotments are a good way to keep fit, socialise and  grow healthy, fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • There are just over 700 tenants, with many ladies now enjoying allotment gardening.  We currently have a 98% occupancy level, the highest in the last 10 years and growing.  
  • 9 sites currently have a committee structure.
  • The main issues faced by existing plot holders are security, anti social behaviour (vandalism), however some sites have benefited from added security and have seen a reduction in such behaviour.

       The majority of sites are now full with waiting lists.  The allotment sites are listed below:

  •          Tilehouse, (Rear of St Lukes, off Plymouth Road), Southcrest
  •          Walkwood (opposite Drake Close, rear of Walkwood Road)
  •          Webheath (corner of Bromsgrove Road and Birchfield Road)
  •          Winyates Green (End of Furze Lane)
  •          Sandpitts (rear of Oakly Road), Southcrest/Town Centre&

Some Allotment Associations charge an association fee so please check this with a representative from the association.
Water charge is only applicable where water is present and billed to Redditch Borough Council

There are 3 sites currently without piped water. They are: Beoley Road, Sandpitts and Church Hill.  The rest   have piped water

There is no concession on the water charge.  The cost of water is the same for all allotment holders.



 

The Allotment Regeneration Initiative were commissioned by The Department for Communities and Local Government to produce a revised copy of the 'Allotments -  A Plot Holders Guide'.  The guide covers a range of subjects which will be of interest to allotments holders and people thinking about taking on an allotment.  A copy can be downloaded from the ARI website.

 The National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardens wwwis an organisation whose aim is to Protect, promote and preserve allotments all over the country.  They can offer you legal advise and general allotment gardening advice.  As a member you will receive a quarterly magazine and will be entitled to a discounted seed scheme

 Growveg www is an independent site and helps people new to allotment gardening.  There is an annual subscription to this site.
