Dog Fouling Campaign 2011
Dog Fouling in some parts of Redditch were becoming
an increasing problem.
The victims of dog fouling are often children, pushchair and
wheelchair users. Dog poo contains toxocariasis which is an
infection that if caught can cause blindness, fits and
asthma.
We decided to launch a campaign to engage with dog walkers
and non dog walkers about picking up their dogs poo and to
highlight to residents the abundance of dog poo within their local
area.
Council officers targeted problem areas by spraying dog
mess with fluorescent orange paint as well as display banners
on the side of waste collection vehicles and temporary signs
pointing out that those who fail to pick up after their dogs could
be fined £50.
This gained a lot of interest from the local radio stations and
even the BBC 1 'Filthy rotten scoundrels' program which our very
own Anna Warell- Hill and Peter Brown both from Waste Managment at
Redditch and Bromsgrove Councils appeared in.
There was a 78% inprovement in target areas for the reduction of
dog fouling in the Redditch Borough.
At a recent community meeting with local residents we had
this feedback:
'Incidents of dog mess seem to be less and they felt that
the campaign was having a positive effect in what are usually
problem areas (salters lane and the pond area) these comments came
from a PACT meeting'
Areas were patrolled between July to October 2011
but we are continuing to monitor any area we feel is a problem to
residents so please feel free to contact us on the number
below.
