Cash Machine Theft

RBC-Community-Safety-Cash-Machine

To avoid losing your money at a Cash Machine the following precautions are recommended:

  • Where ever possible/practical try and use Cash Machines during the day.  If using them at night only use Cash Machines in a well-lit, open, high-traffic area, go with a friend if possible.
  • Avoid Cash machines adjacent to obvious hiding places.
  • When you approach a Cash Machine scan the area first for loiterers.  If you see somebody suspicious hanging around, walk away and go back later.
  • Have your card ready, only take what you need, don’t walk around with bundles of cash on you.  Leave quickly, not counting your cash in public.
  • Don´t keep your PIN number with your cash card. If you have trouble remembering it, incorporate it into a telephone number so it is not as obvious. Keep your card separate from your cheque book
  • Be discreet when entering your PIN Number.
  • Divide your money about your person, don’t keep it all together.
  • Don't argue, fight or attempt to follow a thief, if confronted, give up the cash.

Report any theft or loss immediately to your bank and the police.
