Carbon Monoxide ... The Silent Killer
Carbon Monoxide kills around 50 in the UK each year.
It is an odourless, colourless, non-irritant gas.
These figures may just be the tip of the iceberg as poisoning by carbon monoxide is almost certainly under-detected. There are two main reasons for this:
- There is generally little awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning among the general public and the medical proffession.

Where does Carbon Monoxide come from?
Domestic Sources of carbon monoxide include:
- Domestic Heating Systems
- Blocked Flues/ chimneys
- Inadequate ventilation in living areas
- Leakages from faulty appliances and chimney flues
What are the symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?
The commonest of symptoms include:
- Headaches
- Nausea and Vomitting
- Lethargy/ Fatigue
- Weakness
- Disorientation
- Chest pains.

Always ensure that you take the appropriate steps to avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
- Have a valid Gas Safety Certificate
- Do not block or obstruct ventilation to any gas appliance.
- If you do have an alarm and it sounds - open all windows and doors, turn OFF the gas supply to all appliances, move all occupants to fresh air - call 0800 111 999 Gas Emergency IMMEDIATELY.
- Carbon Monoxide Poisoning can be similar to flu. If a member of you household displays signs, seek medical advice.
- Have all gas appliances regularly checked by a Corgi registered engineer.
