When you sign your tenancy agreement you will normally be offered a joint tenancy. During your tenancy you can ask for any other adult living with you to become a joint tenant. This person must use the house as their main residence, and must have been living there for at least twelve months prior to the application being made.
If you do become joint tenants both tenants are legally and severally responsible for all the conditions of the tenancy agreement and for all rent payments. Make sure you understand the agreement and your responsibilities of being a tenant before you sign.
