Industrial Noise

If you live near to an industrial process or a commercial unit, you may be bothered by noise from its operations.  If this is the case, the Environmental Health department may be able to help.  

The investigation procedure is similar to that described in the Neighbourhood Noise Section and action can be taken under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.  However in industrial or commercial noise cases, the fines can be up to a maximum of up to £20,000 per offence if the case goes to Court.

In addition, we have to take into account whether the Company has taken what is known as "Best Practicable Means" in order to reduce noise to a minimum.  This means that the company is obliged to take all reasonable steps to resolve the problem, without entailing excessive costs.  

Construction Site Noise

Construction sites can pose a temporary but serious nuisance to those living or working close to them, especially in very quiet areas.

When investigating a complaint, the officer will consider the rights of the occupier as well as the fact that the construction job needs to be completed.  The Pollution Control Section can apply conditions upon contractors to achieve a balanced approach.  

The Council recommends that any noisy activities on a building site should be restricted to the hours of

Monday to Friday             08.00 – 18.00

Saturday                          08.00 – 13.00

Sunday & Bank Holidays -          no working.
