Community Safety

What is Community Safety?

Community Safety is the concept of “community based action to prevent and remedy the causes and consequences of criminal, intimidatory and other related anti-social behaviour.”

Redditch Community Safety Partnership

Redditch Community Safety Partnership was developed in 1998 to secure sustainable reduction in crime and the fear of crime in local communities.

So who are we and what do we do?

We are representatives from different agencies and organisations who want to make Redditch a better place for everyone who lives, works or visits the Borough. To see a list of our partners click here

We listen to your concerns about a wide range of Community Safety issues including:

  • Anti-social behaviour
  • Crime
  • Street lighting
  • Drug and alcohol related issues

We all want our communities to be safe places and by working together we can find the solutions which will mean a better future for all.

Since the Partnerships’ inception it has focused on tackling the concerns of people in Redditch, by consulting and finding out what really matters to you.

Community Safety Audit and Strategy 2002 – 2005

A Crime and Disorder Audit took place between April through to December 2001 to obtain information about impressions and experiences of crime and safety within the borough. As a result, five key priority areas were identified for action.

The priorities are:

  • Drugs and Alcohol
  • Violence
  • Community Involvement
  • Town Centre
  • Property Crime

The Community Safety Partnership has developed Action plans to tackle the wide-ranging issues identified within these priority areas.

What are we doing to beat Crime and Disorder?

There are many successful initiatives led by the Council and the Community Safety Partnership. For example, CCTV cameras have been installed within the town centre area and keep a watchful eye on any criminal activity. Since its launch in 2001 CCTV has allowed its operators to report over 1600 incidents to the police. CCTV footage has provided vital evidence in a number of cases.

Other projects that have been developed and undertaken are:

  • Taxi in car camera scheme – CCTV installed in a number of taxis across the town to specifically target hate and race crime and reassure the public.
  • Implementation of Dispersal Zones – to tackle and reduce anti-social behaviour in areas where this has been reported; Police along with the local authority can disperse groups of people who are behaving in an anti-social manner.
  • Lifeline Units – Units have been installed particularly to reassure victims of domestic violence, resulting in a reduction in re-victimisation.
  • Personal Alarms – Money was allocated for the purchase and distribution of 60 personal alarms: follow up questionnaires reported that 63% of those with alarms felt safer
  • Research and surveillance Project – covert surveillance to detect the illegal supply of drugs in order to convict offenders and reduce the supply
  • Drivers Vehicle Pack – 3000 information packs have been distributed; since the project began there has been a marked reduction in reported cases of theft from vehicles
  • Hot Stuff Summer Programme – Diversionary summer activity schemes
