Making a Claim

Application forms are available from the One Stop Shop at the Town Hall and on-line. There is only one application form to complete regardless of the type of your property

You should return the completed application form as quickly as possible so that you do not lose benefit..

Proof of your income and capital etc can follow later. You will also need to provide two forms of identity and a national insurance number. Any Housing or Council Tax Benefit you are entitled to will commence from the Monday following receipt of your claim by the Benefits office.

If you would like your benefit to start from an earlier date, you will need to make a request, in writing. There is a section on the form for this.

Benefit Application Promotion

You must include the date you want benefit backdating to and full reasons as to why you did not apply at the correct time.

  • All sections of the form must be completed. If a particular section does not apply it should be marked "N/A" or "None" if referring to an amount.
  • Any part of the form not answered or indicated as above may result in further enquiries having to be made by the benefit section and may delay the claim.
  • The person claiming the benefit must complete the form. If this is not possible then clear reasons must be given and the person who is completing the form must be identified.
  • If the claimant has a partner both must sign the form, if only one signature is received the form will have to be returned and will delay the claim.
  • If a claimant is unable to complete the form or they (or their partner) cannot sign then the person who completes the form must provide proof of Power of Attorney documents (or similar) before the claim can be accepted.

Staff at the One Stop Shops can assist with completing the form. When all the information has been supplied we will write to you within 14 days to tell you if you are entitled to benefit.   

Remember

Benefit is only payable from the Monday after the form is received.  Supporting documents e.g. Wage slips, bank statements etc. can be forwarded later.  Any problems providing documents should be notified immediately.  We may be able to accept an alternative or give further advice/time. If you do not contact us your claim may be withdrawn or cancelled..
