Children's Services as at Spring Term 2008

Worcestershire’s Education Service

• Has a net expenditure of £364 million (£251 million delegated to schools).

• Has over 10,000 teaching, specialist and support staff.

• Supports early years education in 316 private and voluntary settings within the county

 with grant funding for over 7,000 3 and 4 year olds.

• Educates about 76,000 pupils in over 250 schools.

• Admits approximately 6,000 4 year olds to 179 primary schools each year.

• Transfers approximately 10,500 pupils to middle and high schools each year.

• Transports 9,000 pupils to school each day at a cost of approximately

 £12 million annually.

• Supports and advises over 4,000 governors.

• Supports over 8,500 (8,593) pupils with special educational needs each year, including

 2,417 with statements and over 1,800 (1,806) with low incidence disability.

• Delivers over 3,500 instrumental music lessons per week to more than 11,000 pupils

 and organises and administers more than 60 bands, choirs and orchestras throughout

 the County.

• Deals with approximately 4,500 referrals on welfare and attendance issues each year.

• Issues 1,500 employment permits to school children and visits hundreds of

 potential employers.

• Arranges 7,500 free school meals each day.

• Carries out over 6,000 advisory and inspection visits to schools each year.

• Organises some 700 courses each year for heads, deputies, teachers and

 support assistants.

• Currently manages over £50 million worth of Education building projects.

• Deals with tens of thousands of direct enquiries each year from schools, governors,

 parents, councillors and members of the publicE

• Arranges financial support for 13,500 higher education students from both

 Herefordshire and Worcestershire, attending universities/colleges throughout the UK.

• Runs an internationally renowned Environmental Education Centre in partnership

 with Industry and FE.

• Operates three outdoor education centres introducing thousands of children

 every year to personal and group challenges in the outdoors and training teachers in

 leadership skills.
